Stewardship can mean different things to people. In the context of Trinity Health Of New England's strategic plan, effective stewardship means that we honor our heritage and hold ourselves accountable for the human, nancial and natural resources entrusted to our care. Perhaps the most recognizable example of stewardship pertains to our natural resources. Most people can relate to and have direct experience with natural conservation, perhaps through something as simple as recycling. When we think of nature we might not immediately relate to a hospital or health system, but we are completely engaged in becoming good stewards of our natural resources. This is demonstrated through actions such as upgrading lighting systems for greater energy conservation, utilizing alternative energy sources such as fuel cells and solar energy, and reducing waste of all kinds throughout our facilities. Yet natural resources are just one area of interest; another realm of effective stewardship is the use of our nancial resources. We recognize that we are a public resource, here rst and foremost to serve the needs of our community. In this capacity, we make decisions to invest wisely, carefully balancing our nancial resources with local demands and expectations. We advocate for effective public policies that will promote sustainability, affordability, and community health and well-being. In this context, effective stewardship demands that we focus on change and working in partnership with others. It requires that we realize that the things around us, even our organizations, have been entrusted to us and that we should prepare for the future and not just for today. Finally, we believe that all people deserve to be treated with justice, compassion and dignity. This requires effective stewardship of our human resources, the most precious of all. In order to act on this belief, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Trinity Health Of New England offer a continuum of care and services that provide education, early detection and diagnosis, effective treatments, rehabilitation, and ongoing support. This is brought to life vividly in places like our emergency departments, which welcome more than 300,000 patients at their most vulnerable moment of need. It is expressed throughout the halls of our hospitals and throughout our community, anywhere our colleagues interact with our patients and their families. Whether we are operating in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites, providing health education in a church basement, or teaching about car seat safety at a Yard Goats game, we are expressing our commitment to effective stewardship. Effective stewardship is not simply making donations or taking care of our buildings and grounds. It is a comprehensive belief system that springs naturally from our Catholic heritage, and the way we do business at Trinity Health Of New England. TrinityHealthOfNE.org Christopher M.
