Hartford nonprofit hosts event on race and society The Legacy Foundation of Hartford Inc., a nonprofit that focuses on addressing disparities in health and education in the most challenged areas of Hartford, held an event in the city recently to discuss race and society. The event featured author Angie Thomas, whose book, "The Hate U Give," has been No. 1 on The New York Times Young Adult Hardcover's bestseller list since March. Kelser Corp. raises money for Hospital for Special Care Glastonbury technology consulting firm Kelser Corp. recently held its 21st Kelser Charity Challenge at Indian Hill Country Club in Newington. The golf tournament kicked off fundraising for the Hospital for Special Care's new center for memory disorders by raising an estimated $16,000. OF NOTE Bloomfield's Back East Brewery recently earned a gold medal in the 2017 Great American Beer Festival competition. The brewery was the only gold medal winner from New England, taking first place in the "Brown Porter" category. Wendy Martinson, a Hartford HealthCare nurse, received a Diamond Jubilee nursing award from the Connecticut Nurses' Association at the Oct. 4 awards reception in Cromwell. Martinson, of Newington, was nominated by her colleagues for the 2017 Florence S. Wald Award for Outstanding Contribution to Nursing Practice.
