Brown said much of it has hinged on retail develop- ment at the North Quabbin Commons, a mixed-used develop- ment visible from Route 2 in Athol, and the tipping point was the arrival of a Market Basket in 2015. The commons also has an eight- screen cinema and a Starbucks. Those are joined by Heywood's Tully Family Medicine practice, which this summer relocated from Phillipston to the larger site. Mark Wright, executive director at the North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce and an Athol native, said there were many sighs of relief in the community when Athol and Heywood merged, and he said the millions of dollars invested into Athol Hospital and services off campus have been impressive. Wright noted Heywood Healthcare is the largest employer in the region, so investment and growth in the system will reverber- ate. "It will help drive more economic development. It will also help drive an increase in property values and home construction," Wright said. n In 1980, there were 108 acute-care hospitals operating in Massachusetts. By 2015, that number had been whittled down to 65, according to the Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis. A decades-long trend toward consolidation among hospitals has brought many former compet- itors, like Heywood Hospital and the former Athol Memorial Hospital, together through mergers and affiliations. The trend continues as cost pressures on hospitals mount. Here are some notable local examples. UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster and UMass Memorial - Clinton Hospital The larger UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance and UMass Memorial - Clinton Hospital merged on Oct. 1, with neighboring Clinton Hospital now operating as a satellite campus under the HealthAlliance Hospital license. Harrington Hospital and Hubbard Regional Hospital Harrington HealthCare, based in Southbridge, acquired the former Hub- bard Regional Hospital in nearby Webster in 2009, creating a satellite hospital campus known as Harrington Healthcare at Webster. Framingham Union Hospital and Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick e two hospitals join forces in 1992 to form MetroWest Medical Center, with Framingham Union as the main campus. Other notable hospital mergers HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital has been operating as a satellite of Leominster-based HealthAlliance Hospital, owned by UMass Memorial Health Care, since October 1.
