The fatality rate on the state's rural non-Interstate roads is dispro- portionately higher than that on all other roads in the state (1.51 fatalities per 100 million miles of travel vs. 0.49). ¡ Motor vehicle crashes in which roadway design was likely a contributing factor cost Maine motorists $457 million a year in medical costs, lost productivity, travel delays, workplace costs, insurance and legal costs. S O U R C E : TRIP, "Key Facts about Maine's Surface Transportation System and Federal Funding," May 2017 M aine consistently fares poorly on annual grades of its infrastructure network. Yet as the entire Northeast copes with aging infrastructure and the burden that comes with an increased level of traf- fic and congestion, Maine can console itself with at least not having the population density that chokes networks in Boston, New York and other major cit- ies. Below we offer a look at various pieces of the infrastructure and transportation network in Maine. S TA R T I N G O N F O L L OW I N G PA G E » M
