46 Giving Guide 2017 Worcester Business Journal www.wbjournal.com United Way of Central Massachusetts Future Goals Our donors, staff, and volunteers improve our community by changing one life at a time. In our leadership role helping to address the complex challenges facing our community—including how to reduce poverty, hunger, health risks, and financial instability—United Way works with local agencies on four shared goals that are the building blocks for a successful life and stable community. • Education: We are committed to helping children and youth achieve their potential through education by increasing the high school graduation rate in Central Massachusetts by 10 percent by 2020. • Family Stability: We are committed to helping families become stable and financially independent, and will work to reduce the child poverty rate in Central Massachusetts by 10 percent by 2020. • Health: To help families nurture healthy minds and bodies, we are committed to reducing the childhood obesity rate in Central Massachusetts by 10 percent by 2020. • Safety Net: We are committed to providing the necessary resources to help people move from crisis to self-sufficiency, including food, housing, disaster relief, and protective services. Fundraising Events/Opportunities Each year, United Way of Central Massachusetts assists nearly 130 area businesses with customized fundraising campaigns that help make our community stronger, healthier, and more stable—a more desirable place to live and work. United Way workplace campaigns are scheduled at the convenience of each business, and payroll deduction makes it simple to participate. We provide experts to speak with employees about how their donations help others and deliver positive change where it matters most. We help plan and manage every detail of workplace campaigns, making them easy to run, so that your employee United Way campaign becomes a rewarding, team-building experience and an important, anticipated date in your organization's annual planning. Call today and find out how to give your employees an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our community. Volunteer Opportunities For more than 30 years, the United Way of Central Massachusetts Volunteer Center has helped to support, initiate, and promote volunteerism throughout the region. At any given time, we maintain a database of 300 mid- to long-term volunteer opportunities for a wide range of local social service organizations. In addition, we offer a program of flexible, short-term "done in a day" projects that still provide great opportunities to offer meaningful support. There are so many rewarding ways to get involved: • Volunteer your time, expertise and talents individually or with your family. • Coordinate with a group of co-workers to complete a seasonal volunteer project. • Participate in United Way's Day of Caring, our annual corporate day of service. • Work with Volunteer Center staff to develop a specialized team-building volunteer project. • Let our youth programming experts help you to encourage younger relatives to volunteer after school or during the summer. • Use your professional skills in our "loaned executive" program to enhance the work of United Way during our annual fundraising campaign. • Become a member of the Women's Initiative and use your talent to support middle-school age girls. Visit www.unitedwaycm.org for a complete listing of Volunteer services. Giving Opportunities In addition to hosting a workplace campaign, United Way offers meaningful ways to participate in the community throughout the year—not only through financial contributions, but by opportunities to volunteer and to advocate for particular community needs and issues. Examples include: • Attend the United Way annual celebration each year in May to see and learn about our positive impact in the community. • Give securely online anytime at www.unitedwaycm.org. • See our annual Holiday Wish List and donate toys, clothes, and other needed items that will help kids in need enjoy a happy holiday season. • Support United Way's Women's Initiative to help middle- school age girls succeed. • Support the Worcester Free Tax Service Coalition, providing IRS-trained volunteers who help low-income families take advantage of earned income tax credits. • Join our Alexis de Tocqueville Society, where our most generous donors meet the needs of the community in extraordinary ways. • Create a team for the United Way annual Day of Caring, with half-day or full-day volunteer opportunities at various non-profit agencies throughout Central Massachusetts. • Join our social network and advocate for a cause—for impactful change in our community that benefits us all.
