Additionally, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that
rumbled through Mexico damaged approximately
155,000 buildings, caused more than 300 deaths and
injured thousands of people. And mudslides in West
Africa have taken the lives of 500 people. Unsanitary
conditions in that region are causing an uptick in chol-
era and malaria cases, which may increase the death
toll.
In spite of high-tech advances in meteorological
science, weather forecasters cannot accurately predict
where and when the next big weather-related event
will take place.
Fortunately, disasters like this tend to awaken a
humanitarian response in people. It's heartening to
witness the scores of people who have answered the
call to offer assistance in the form of manpower, goods
and financial support.
But while crisis situations, whether natural or man-
made, call for immediate emergency efforts, many
year-round needs also exist. Hunger, poverty, lack of
access to education, health care and other resources
touch every neighborhood around the world. Central
Massachusetts is fortunate to have many non-profit
organizations and agencies dedicated to helping all
who are in need.
For instance, Ascentria aims to provide comprehen-
sive services that address the physical, social, intellec-
tual, spiritual and economic needs of every individual

n recent months, several disas-
ters have shaken communities
across the globe. Hurricane
Harvey demolished large sec-
tions of Texas and, close on its heels,
Hurricane Irma ripped through
Florida, leaving destruction, devasta-
tion and death in its wake. Shortly
after, Hurricanes Jose and Maria
swept through Bermuda, Puerto Rico
and other islands, causing power
outages, food and fuel shortages and
homelessness.
