"Working in the manufacturing industry is about speed,
at least that's what I thought at first. You have to be able
to figure out how to process the part you're working on in the
shortest amount of time. To do this you have to figure out how to
get the part from point A to point B in the least number of steps
possible, for example, never picking up the part more than once.
What I've learned is that you don't have to be fast; you have to
be smart. For me, the issue was not speed, but finding a way to
communicate with other people, having to tell other people about
the problems you're finding, or simply asking what they want
done next. I didn't say more than 'yes' over the first two weeks.
Eventually some fellow employees took me under their wing, and
without them, I would never have made it as far as I have. They
showed me tips to go faster, and helped me to come out of my
shell. Working in the manufacturing industry has helped me grow
as a person, and it's helped make me the person I am today, in just
one short year. Now I look forward to going to work every day – I
haven't missed a day yet – and I appreciate meeting new people
and having an environment with the tools to succeed."
