August 2016: Mainebiz selected Sweetser President and CEO Debra Taylor as a 2016 Women to Watch honoree for her contributions to the behavioral health field and community. July 2016: The Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, awarded Sweetser the contract to provide recovery- based peer training statewide. December 2015: Sweetser selected RFP awardee for provision of mental health crisis services in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services and Office of Child and Family Services. MISSION STATEMENT Sweetser's mission is to provide quality treatment, support and hope to children, adults and families through a network of mental health, behavioral health and educational services. SERVICE LOCATION(S) State of Maine Sweetser 2018 GOALS Sweetser offers a statewide network of care in the treatment of mental illness in community-based settings with services that include crisis, outpatient, peer support, residential and education. Annually, Sweetser's compassionate professionals connect more than 20,000 children, adults and families with the services they need. Key focus areas include: f Ensuring quality, timely residential care for children in need. f Implementing the principles of Cornell University's Children And Residential Experiences (CARE). f Offering the state's only comprehensive program for life-threatening eating disor- ders through the New England Eating Disorders (NEED) program at Sweetser. f Promoting 24/7 crisis services, including suicide prevention. f Training community members in Mental Health First Aid on how to respond to a crisis involving Youth, Adults and Older Adults through the Sweetser Training Institute. f Recognizing and championing the strength of the community mental health system in Maine as a practical alternative to more costly alternatives, such as emergency rooms, inpatient hospital care and jails. f Providing access to necessary services (free and reduced fee) for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES Sweetser has three major fundraising events that provide several sponsorship opportunities for business participation and donor support. f The Sweetser/KeyBank "Sold on Kids" Auction & Dinner is on May 11, 2018 at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland. Approximately 400 guests attend this fun night. f The Sweetser/Prime Motor Group Golf Classic is scheduled for June 18, 2018 at Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach. is popular tourna- ment includes 37 teams. f Cycle or Stroll for Sweetser will be held in September 2018. is fun bike/ walk event begins at the Sweetser campus farm in Saco along the Eastern Trail. e bike ride includes three distances: 2 miles, 8 miles and 14 miles. e walk distance is 3 miles. Children 12 and under participate for free. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Volunteers are essential to Sweetser's work, adding life experience, diverse inter- ests and unique abilities to extend the network of care we offer to children, adults, families and communities. Available opportunities include: one day volunteer activi- ties for organizations to paint, landscape or other large projects, administrative or office support, activity leader, spending one-to-two hours per week sharing hobbies and interests in residential settings; classroom assistant, working with a teacher or teacher's aide; mentors, who commit to regular visits, developing a positive, support- ive relationship with a child; and volunteers for special fundraising events.
