MISSION STATEMENT The AHA's mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The nation's leader in CPR education training, the AHA teams with volunteers and community partners to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. SERVICE LOCATION(S) State of Maine 2018 GOALS Our impact goal, by the year 2020, is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20%, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20%. Some of the ways we are striving to reach this goal in Maine are: f Funding research with two active grants totaling nearly $250,000 at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute in Portland and e Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor. f Inspiring women to take charge of their heart health through the Maine Goes Red statewide awareness campaign, sponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. f Improving employee health through workplace wellness pro- grams and free Hands-Only CPR demonstrations. f Teaming up with local schools to combat childhood obesity through programs like Jump Rope for Heart. During the last school year, Maine students raised more than $425,000. f Providing science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare profession- als to help them provide quality care to their patients with our Get With e Guidelines program. f Educating Mainers about the signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke and the importance of call- ing 9-1-1 immediately. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES f Become a You're the Cure Advocate to help educate our legislators on our public policy efforts regarding obesity prevention, heart disease and stroke prevention funding, tobacco control and healthcare reform initiatives. Heart disease and stroke survivors are always welcome to share their personal stories to help people edu- cate others about the warning signs and symptoms. Health professionals can give a clinical perspective on the AHA's public health initiatives, such as school nutrition, fitness, choles- terol and blood pressure manage- ment, smoking cessation, and other ways to lower cardiovascular disease risk. Media training is provided. f Join our Maine Board of Directors. f Lead a Heart Walk team at your company or with family and friends. f Participate in one of our event planning committees and gather employees to help with logistics at our events.
