This would be the biggest change to WBJ in about a decade, as we modernized our style to our audience's preferences. Associate Art Director Mitchell Hayes spearheaded the effort – with myself and Publisher Peter Stanton throwing in our ideas probably too frequently for his tastes – and on Sept. 26, we unveiled the design you now see in this issue. On June 24, our industry association – the Alliance of Area Business Publishers – named WBJ its best designed business journal in the small newspaper category, honoring Hayes with the Gold Award for Best Overall Design. The redesign had been warmly received by our readership, and we didn't necessarily need an award to validate the change; but it sure was nice to be honored in a room full of our peers – 43 publications in the United States, Canada and Australia. AABP even named us the third best overall small newspaper in the country, among six awards WBJ received this year, which is the most we've won in any year. I was slightly less ecstatic about the third place finish in the overall category, since we won second last year. Yet, being third among the AABP publications is quite the honor; and second place went deservingly to our sister publication MaineBiz. For our four other awards: • Staff Writer Laura Finaldi won two Silver Awards for Best Explanatory Journalism for her story on the 2016 Massachusetts energy bill called and for Best Local Coverage of a National Economic Story for her story about how immigrants impact the Worcester. • Former WBJ Digital Editor Sam Bonacci won the Gold Award for Best Scoop for his breaking news coverage of the drastic economic downturn the Greendale Mall had taken. • The entire WBJ staff won the Gold Award for Best Ancillary Publication for the special supplement "A Guide to STUFF Made in Massachusetts" which focuses on the Central Massachusetts manufacturing industry. Like I said, awards aren't necessary to The best designed business journal Worcester Business Journal (ISSN#1063-6595) is published bi-weeky, 24x per year, including 5 special issues in April, July, September, November and December, by New Engand Business Media. 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604.
