22 Hartford Business Journal • July 17, 2017 www.HartfordBusiness.com Jessica Hinman Q&A: What do you do in your current job? As director of community outreach and special events I am respon- sible for developing, coordinating, implementing and supervising all marketing, advertising and community outreach efforts, maintaining partnerships, and vol- unteer recruitment and oversight. In addition, I plan, oversee and execute all of Camp Courant's internal and third-party special events. What are your goals in your current job? Though the specific goals I have at Hartford's Camp Courant are varied, the all-inclusive purpose is to engage and con- nect with the community. Establishing and building relationships with individuals, corporations and other nonprofits is essential for the sustainability and suc- cess of what we do. What's your biggest passion? What truly motivates me, in both my professional and personal life, is paying it forward for the next generation and raising the expec- tations of those around me. All too often we become wrapped up in our immediate needs and desires and fail to see the impact we have on others. We, as local leaders and role models, have a responsibility to guide and support those who are in need and continue to set the example. What are your future professional aspirations? I have always been driven to seek new and challenging career opportunities in multiple industries, and it is that enthusiasm that will continue to guide my profes- sional career. To continue to be perceptive to diverse roles that encompass my interests and skills while making a positive impact in our society is paramount to my professional future. How are you involved in the community? My position with Hartford's Camp Courant supports me in being closely connected to the community and other orga- nizations supporting youth development. In addition I serve on two other nonprofit boards, Literacy Volun- teers of Central CT and Friends of Heublein Tower, and am a member of the HYPE Professional Develop- ment committee. What do you hope Greater Hartford will be like in 10 years? A self-professed lover of local history, I would love to witness Hartford returning to the economic and social success that it was at the turn of the 20th century into the 1930s. During that time it was an epi- center of commerce, innovation and social life culti- vating some of the greatest individuals and companies of our nation. I, along with countless other Greater Hartford natives, aspire and endeavor to propel this city forward by learning from its remarkable past. I recently transi- tioned from the public sector as legal counsel and execu- tive director for the Secretary of the State's Office, State Board of Accountancy and Division Director of the Busi- ness Recording Unit into the private sector as a senior manager in the risk and regulatory affairs practice for a professional services firm. My fervor for being an advocate for social and economic change in the world has propelled me to help people in communities in need. I am a lifelong learner and enjoy being in an academic setting; as such, I look forward to one day having a post-retirement career in academia. How are you involved in the community? I enjoy serv- ing the Greater Hartford community, particularly by fundraising for local nonprofits. I am a member of several women's organizations, including the Greater Hartford of the Links Inc. and Jack and Jill Chapter of Greater Hartford. In addition, I participate in voter registra- tion and organ donation drives and volunteer at my son's school. If you were governor of Connecticut for a day what is one policy you'd push to improve the state's future? As a former state employee and manager, I am passionate about the future of Connecticut. It is imperative that we address the fiscal debt of the state of Connecticut, without harming our society by taxing people out of the state or drastically cutting services to those who need it the most. I think there should be more focus on improving the private sector. We cannot continue to price young Millennials out of the market, thus creating a self-imposed brain drain. We have to find a way to become more attractive to young families by lowering taxes and sustaining the middle class.
