That was an increase from 5.8 million such businesses reported just five years prior, at a time when the overall count of American busi- nesses rose by just 2 percent, from 27.1 million to 27.6 mil- lion. Minority-owned firms account for nearly one-third of all businesses, and are espe- cially prevalent for the services, transportation and warehousing industries, the Census Bureau reported. The largest increase among those minority-owned business- es were in Hispanic-owned businesses, which grew by 46 percent. African-American- owned businesses grew by 35 percent, and Asian-owned firms by 24 percent.
