Our experienced group of medical, behavioral, nutrition and fitness specialists is bariatric-trained and will work one-on-one with you to create an indi- vidualized program that fits your needs. We are dedi- cated to providing an understanding, supportive, environment that helps you live a healthier life by losing weight and keeping it off long-term. Our team is led by Chief of Bariatric Surgery Nari Sabeti, M.D. Highly experienced, with over 1,000 suc- cessful procedures under her belt, Dr. Sabeti com- pleted her Fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Sabeti is Certified by the American Board of Surgery, is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. "Obesity is a serious health issue, which can lead to many related conditions," shared Dr. Sabeti. "Bariatric surgery is a proven tool that can be the catalyst to a healthier lifestyle for many patients." At the Heywood Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery, we perform two types of weight loss surgery. In most cases, bariatric surgery can be per- formed laparoscopically, using several small incisions in the abdomen. This minimally invasive procedure reduces recuperation time and offers less chance of infection than open surgery. The first option for patients is the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – often called simply, gastric bypass – which is considered the 'gold standard' of weight loss surgery. Similar to most bariatric procedures, the newly created stomach pouch is considerably smaller and facilitates significantly smaller meals, which translates into fewer calories consumed. Because there is less digestion of food due to the smaller stom- ach pouch and a segment of small intestine that no longer has food going through it, there is less absorp- tion of calories and nutrients. In addition, the re- routing of the food stream produces changes in gut hormones that promote satiety and suppress hunger. Another option for patients offered at Heywood is the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy – often called the Gastric Sleeve – which removes approximately 70-80 percent of the stomach. The remaining stom- ach is a tubular pouch that resembles a banana. Short term studies show that the sleeve is as effective as the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass in terms of weight loss and improvement or remission of diabetes. Most importantly, these procedures can often improve or reverse type 2 diabetes and other weight- related health concerns like high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint-related mobility issues. Our primary care physi- cians, like Dr. Helen Heneghan of Ashburnham Family Medicine, can now offer more solutions to patients dealing with some of these issues. "The Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery at Heywood is a wonderful new resource for my patients with co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure and diabetes," stated Heneghan. "It is a plea- sure to work with the entire Bariatric medical team, and patients I refer there have renewed hope for a healthier life."
