Cliff Rucker, the owner of the Worcester Railers HC, has brought more than just bring back minor- league hockey to the city. He's bought 311 Main St., the site of law firm Bowditch & Dewey; bought an ownership stake in the Worcester Palladium; is building a Railers-themed restaurant at 90 Commercial St.; and owns the two-rink Worcester Sports Center facility in the Canal District. The mall was bought in a foreclo - sure auction after former mall owner Simon Property Group defaulted on a loan. The mall, which opened in 1987, now has a high vacancy rate, with 19 of 44 storefronts empty. The 19-building apartment complex opened in 2006 as part of the Avalon Communities chain, which has apartments in Marlborough, Natick, Northborough and others. It's still part of the Virginia- based Avalon brand but now owned by the tightly- held Audubon Capital Partners of Boston, which didn't respond to a request for comment and doesn't list any of its properties on its website.
