He resigned in June amid budgetary concerns. Meehan took over as UMass president two years ago this summer, becoming the first former UMass student to lead the university. He was the UMass Lowell chancellor for eight years following his years as a U.S. representative. The UMass men's basketball coach, a star player for the program when it was at its peak in the early 1990s, was fired in March after a 155-137 record. He'll start his first season this fall at LIU- Brooklyn. Whipple is in his second stint leading UMass football, after compiling a 49-26 record in six years from 1998-2003, winning a Division I-AA National Championship in his first season with the team in 1998. The team was 2-10 last year. Moloney has spent more than 30 years at her alma mater, and became UMass Lowell's first female leader when she succeeded Meehan in 2015. Martin T. Meehan
