The scholarships were made possible by the Island Education Fund. OUT Maine, a rural LGBTQ youth sup- port organization in Rockland, received a $10,000 grant from the Cummings Fund and the Lawrence P. Ralston Fund as part of Maine Community Foundation's Regional Grant Initiative. The funding will bring more training and support to under-resourced rural schools to provide safe spaces for LGBTQ youth, particularly transgender youth in elementary schools. Camden National Corp. announced that its board of directors declared a dividend of 23 cents a share payable on July 31 for shareholders of record on July 17. Downeast Salmon Federation in East Machias announced the formal launch of a $2.2 million fundraising effort to restore wild Atlantic salmon to Maine's Downeast rivers. Bangor Savings Bank reports record earnings Bangor Savings Bank reported a record net income of nearly $25 million for the 2017 fi scal year that ended March 31, an increase of 8.42% over last year. President and CEO Bob Montgomery-Rice made the announcement at the company's annual meeting in Bangor. Its pres- ence in southern Maine continued to grow, with branches opening in downtown Brunswick and on Marginal Way in Portland, increas- ing the number of branch locations in York and Cumberland counties to 16. e bank also added a second branch in Augusta on Community Drive and now has 54 locations throughout Maine. Bangor Savings Bank is the No. 1 mortgage lender in Maine, providing $370.7 million in home loans. Aroostook Beef gets into retail to expand reach e owners of the Aroostook Beef Co. in New Canada will open a retail operation in Fort Kent to expand its customer base. e Bangor Daily News reported that Erin Parisien and Richard Nielsen raise prime black angus cattle and have been selling meat directly to customers from their home and at local farm- ers markets. Parisien told the BDN that opening a store was a bit of a risk, but the popularity of local food would make it worthwhile. e meat will be more expensive than that found in a chain supermarket. "It's been a bit of a struggle to get people to realize local beef is going to be superior to what they get at a grocery store with commercial beef, but they are beginning to fi gure that out," Parisien said.
