Proton therapy machines from Mevion
Medical Systems in Littleton treated 526
patients in 24 months in one room at a
Jacksonville, Fla. cancer treatment center,
a figure that surpasses two-year patient
volume in larger systems with more
rooms, the company announced. Proton
therapy is a targeted cancer treatment that
reduces radiation exposure.
The Mevion machine treats several
cancers, including breast, head and neck,
lung, and prostate. The company has
proton therapy treatment systems in U.S.
cancer treatment centers in Florida,
Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio, New Jersey
and Washington, D.C.
Last year, Mevion announced it would
construct a $25 million proton therapy
system at the Brightlands Maastricht
Health Campus in the Netherlands,
bringing proton therapy to the southeast
part of the Netherlands for the first time.
The company also has a presence in Japan,
China, and other parts of Europe.
