Garver says he's not sure enough con- sumers and other businesses are aware of B Corps yet for the status to make a diff erence in getting more business, but "it was an opportunity for us to fi nd out if we were doing as well as we thought we were doing. We think it's a tool to make us better." Wicked Joe scored a total of 108 in the fi ve categories B Lab scores: environment, workers, customers, com- munity and governance. B Lab requires a score of 80 for eligibility. Wicked has been a B Corp since June 2016. Performance clothes maker Atayne of Brunswick scored 142 and became a B Corp in March 2009. Coff ee By Design scored 87 and was certifi ed in July 2016. MaineWorks, a Portland temp staffi ng agency that employs convicted felons and recovering drug addicts, scored 114 and was certifi ed in December 2013. And ReVision Energy of Portland scored 94 when it was certifi ed in July 2015. "Before we opened Coff ee By Design I used my degree in land- scape architecture to work on projects focused on wetland creation, planned community development, reforestation and stream restoration," Alan Spear, co-owner and co-founder of Coff ee By Design, said when the company got its certifi cation. Becoming a Certifi ed B Corporation is in line with our company ethics." Co-founder Mary Allen Lindemann, just back from a trip to Burundi, told Mainebiz that certifi cation was a very rigorous process, and it should be. It took the company about a year to get through the application process. "It has incredible meaning. We got a really strong baseline of where we are and where we can improve," she says. e application included providing business confi rmation from the company's farmers.
