1980 1990 2000 2010 9 TIMELINE OF EVENTS 1982 The Connecticut Hospital Association publishes a report entitled "Extended Hospital Stays: The Problem that Won't Go Away!" noting that there is a "need for a level of care somewhere between acute care and skilled nursing care." The concept of Long Term Acute Care Hospitals (LTACHs) is emerging as a component of the continuum of care and NBMH, with its chronic-care license and expertise, is at the leading edge. 1984 The Stroke Rehabilitation Program is established. 1989 The New Britain Memorial Hospital Child Care Center is opened. A strong recruitment tool, this hospital-subsidized employee benefit is licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health for 34 children. 1991 NBMH receives $36 million for expansion/renovation from state. 1991 The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) grants the hospital its first accreditation. 1991 Traumatic brain injury and neuro- behavioral programs are formalized. 1993 The new Hospital for Special Care brand is introduced. 1996 Hospital for Special Care (HSC) becomes managing sponsor of the Ivan Lendl Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp; the Ivan Lendl Golf Tournament is created, to raise funds for the camp. 1997 HSC establishes a pediatric dental practice called Special Care Dental Services providing services to Medicaid-eligible children. 1997 Spinal Cord Injury & Wound Management programs are formalized. Although HSC had provided care to patients with spinal cord injuries for decades, in 1997, hospital leaders recognized that a formal program would enhance the quality of care provided for this patient population. 1998 HSC, the only ventilator weaning center in Connecticut, becomes a beta test site for the Venturi ventilator. The new state-of-the-art ventilator weaning system improves outcomes by 50 percent enabling patients to get home an average two weeks sooner. HSC respiratory care services are nationally recognized. 1998 HSC becomes a managing sponsor of The Cruisers Wheelchair Sports Program, focusing on track and field activities for physically disabled children ages 5 through 18. The team competes in local, regional, and national track and field competitions. This sponsorship establishes what is now known as the Adaptive Sports Program. 1999 HSC opens its Aquatic Rehabilitation Center: The state-of-the-art facility includes a fully accessible 27,000- square-foot Aquatic Rehabilitation and Fitness Center featuring two pools and a fitness center specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. 2000 HSC Pulmonary Support group is recognized by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. 2000 The Volunteer Services Joy of Art! program is established with the objective of enhancing the quality of patient life and strengthening the relationship between the hospital and the community. 2001 Equipment Exchange Program Initiative: Operated by HSC Volunteer Services, the program seeks donations of used durable medical equipment (DME), refurbishes the items, and gives them away to those in need. In its first months of operation, 167 pieces of equipment are given out to needy individuals. 2002 Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding Center Inc. joins the HSC community. 2004 HSC opens a satellite in Hartford on the campus of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the first of its kind in Connecticut. The 28-bed Satellite allows HSC to provide its LTACH services to a wider geographic area. 2006 HSC opens the Outpatient Neuromuscular Center: a neuromuscular clinic that combines the expertise of two of the region's leading specialists in that field with that of HSC's existing programs. 2010 Neuromuscular Center becomes an ALS Certified Center of Excellence. 2011 The Cardiac medical unit opens and receives its first LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) patient. 2012 The Autism Center at Hospital for Special Care opens to provide outpatient services to children on the autism spectrum. 2013 HSC establishes the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Center offering comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and related neurological disorders. In conjunction, HSC opens the Swallowing Disorders clinic. 2014 The Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation Outpatient Center opens. The outpatient expansion, funded by the Hope Campaign, is completed in just 12 months. 2015 The Manes & Motions Indoor Riding Arena opens - the organization now offers riding sessions during the cold winter months. 2015 Inpatient Autism Unit opens, first in the state. 2016 HSC's ALS Center of Excellence becomes primary beneficiary of Travelers Championship for the 2016 tournament.
