8 Doing Business in Connecticut | 2017 T here must be something in the water in Connecticut, because we certainly have more than our fair share of innovators. e innovative roots go back to Samuel Colt, a Hartford native and pioneer in the firearms industry. Other inventions to come out of the Nutmeg State include the cotton gin, the nuclear submarine and even the Frisbee! Today, the innovative spirit re- mains strong, with the state ranking fourth in the nation in terms of private research and development investment per capita. In addition, the state was ranked No. 5 in the nation on the Bloomberg State Innovative Index in 2016. Crea vity and ingenuity are hallmarks of the Connec cut culture. Connecticut's Yankee ingenuity goes way back, including to Hartford resident Samuel Colt, who was a pioneer in firearms production. Pictured is the blue dome that tops the Colt building in Hartford.
