The funds will support United Way's Summer Smarts initiative to ensure children have fun learning activities and continue to receive nutritious meals when school isn't in session. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has named Jay Williams, a for- mer assistant commerce secretary under the Obama administration, as its next president. Williams, who lives in Washington, D.C., will begin his new role July 17, succeeding former board chairwoman Yvette Melen- dez, who has been serving as interim presi- dent. Linda J. Kelly, who served the foun- dation as president for more than 11 years, retired in March. Williams most recently served as U.S. assistant secretary of commerce for eco- nomic development, leading the federal economic development agenda for the nation as head of the U.S. Economic Devel- opment Administration. Williams also served as deputy direc- tor of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at The White House, where he was the principal liaison between the presi- dent of the United States and local elected officials. • • • The Dollar General Literacy Foun- dation will award $20,000 in literacy grants to Connecticut nonprofit organiza- tions including: Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport; Bristol Public Library; Connec- tiKids; YWCA of New Britain; and Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury. The funds are aimed at supporting adult, family and summer literacy programs. • • • Johnson Memorial Hospital recently received a $10,000 donation from Big Y Food Inc.'s "Partners of Hope" initiative to benefit the Johnson Memorial Cancer Cen- ter. The money was raised through a month- long campaign to promote breast cancer screenings, education and treatment.
