NEW HAMPSHIRE: First in the Nation 5 N ew Hampshire has long been known as one of the best states in the country in which to live, work, and raise a family, with our high quality of life emanating from the character of our people, our beautiful natural resources and our robust citizen-led democracy. New Hampshire has much to offer. From the mountains that tower over the North Country, to our beautiful lakes and rivers, to the rocky shores and sandy beaches of the Seacoast, and all of our vibrant cities and small town Main Streets in between, the Granite State and her natural beauty has for generations inspired countless poets, artists and leaders. We have many opportunities to enjoy historic sites and landmarks, exhilarating outdoor recreational activities, and great tax-free shopping, and in every part of New Hampshire we welcome visitors with a smile. Every four years the national spotlight shines brightly on the Granite State as we host the First in the Nation Presidential Primary. As we come together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary, we reflect on how the freedom to self-govern and the ability to succeed economically are necessarily intertwined. New Hampshire has long been the initial proving ground for presidential hopefuls because Granite Staters were the first to truly recognize that direct citizen involvement in the nomination process makes for better presidential candidates, and better presidents. Our First in the Nation Presidential Primary is one of New Hampshire's most cherished traditions, representing the vibrant and robust citizen-led democracy that makes our state the perfect place to begin the presidential nominating process. From large energy-filled rallies to quaint small-town coffee shops, Granite Staters have the opportunity to truly engage with presidential hopefuls in a manner that is the cornerstone of civic engagement. As Governor, I am honored to welcome candidates and visitors from around the world to engage in the special traditions of the Granite State. I like to say that, in New Hampshire, we do democracy better than any place else, and as you read this book, you will experience the rich traditions that make our state a special place to live, work, visit and raise a family. v With every good wish, Margaret Wood Hassan Governor Dear Friends: Welcome Muster Field Farm museum, North Sutton, NH P E T E R F I N G E R
