HEALTH • Spring 2017 13 { Local Innovation } UMass Memorial Medical Center is home to a new 3D system that assists in retina surgery UMass Memorial retina surgeons were among the first in the nation to use a new technology for complex vitreoretinal (retina) surgery. The novel 3D visualization system features a high- definition 3D viewing screen linked to two High Dynamic Range (HDR) cameras that provide excellent resolution, image depth, clarity and color contrast. With the three-dimensional view, the surgeon now has depth perception not previously available on standard television monitors, that are often used today in operation rooms. The system allows retinal surgeons to operate looking at a high definition 3D screen, instead of looking through the eye-piece of a microscope. Surgeons operate using 3D glasses to perform these delicate procedures inside the eye that are projected and magnified on a high resolution 4K screen. UMass Memorial is a teaching institution, where leading academicians teach the next generation of eye surgeons. The new system is designed to facilitate teaching in the operating room, as everyone present can see in great detail what the main surgeon is doing. 3D retina surgery at UMass Memorial Dr. Shlomit Schaal, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences performing the surgery looking through 3D glasses at a 4K screen that shows a high resolution magnified real time video of the eye H
