U.S.-made footwear provision now the law President Obama signed the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, which ushers into law a provision that requires the Department of Defense to provide American-made athletic footwear to new recruits upon their arrival at basic training. e provision, known as the Berry Amendment, will be implemented over the course of the next two years and is seen as an oppor- tunity for New Balance's three factories in Maine. First passed in 1941, the Berry Amendment requires the U.S. military to provide its personnel with American- made equipment and uniforms to the greatest extent possible. New Balance has factories in Skowhegan, Norridgewock and Norway. Cianbro lands $27M shipyard contract Cianbro Corp. of Pittsfi eld was awarded a $27 million U.S. Navy contract for construction and dock repairs at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced. In November, Cianbro landed a $29 million contract to support repairs and modernization of struc- tures at a berth at the Kittery shipyard. Cianbro is Maine's largest construction company. e work is expected to be completed by May 2019. Waterville shredding company acquired Records Management Center, a Bangor-based provider of data storage, document scanning and confi dential shredding throughout Maine and New Hampshire, along with ShredSafe LLC, have acquired Shredding On Site, a Waterville-based shredding company. e purchase price was not disclosed. e companies will integrate operations to provide secure on-site document and e-media destruction services and sched- uling in a service area that includes all of Maine and New Hampshire. ey will retain all staff , equipment and service scheduling of the Waterville company. e name Shredding On Site also is being retained. e combined opera- tions will have 42 employees.
