Bowie C O N T I N U E D O N P A G E 8 2 » Bernstein Shur again tops the list of Maine's largest law firms W hile there was some shuffling through the ranks of Maine's largest law firms, the composition of the top of the list remained largely the same as it had in 2015. Even beyond creating high-paying jobs, the 3,100 members of Maine's state bar play important roles in servicing Maine's business and non-profit community and in providing pro-bono legal services for those who need them. What's more, Maine's top firms earn national rec- ognition in reports such as the best in their field, which enhances Maine's status as a good place to do business. For the second straight year, Bernstein Shur is Maine's largest law firm, with 99 Maine attorneys and a total of 181 employees throughout its two offices in the state. The Portland-based firm added four attorneys and seven new employees at its two offices over the past year. Following Bernstein Shur, is the same lineup of firms as the previous year, and they appear in the same order as they did in 2015. That includes the Portland-based firms of Verrill Dana, Pierce Atwood LLP, Preti Flaherty, Drummond Woodsum, Eaton Peabody, Norman Hanson & DeTroy LLC, and Bangor-based Rudman Winchell. Perkins Thompson of Portland moved up a spot in this year's ranking to No. 9, though its employ- ment ranks remained the same with 25 attorneys in Maine and 40 total employees. It swapped spots with No. 10-ranked Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry, which had 21 attorneys and 39 employees in Maine, eight fewer attorneys and three fewer employees than the previous year. Rounding out the list are two firms that did not ap- pear in 2015. That includes Portland's Roach, Hewitt, Ruprecht, Sanchez, & Bischoff, which had six attorneys and nine total employees. Littler & Mendlesohn, also in Portland, which has five attorneys and nine employees. But the rankings only tell part of the story. Though Verrill Dana continued as the state's No. 2 law firm, with 88 attorneys and 178 employees, firm officials reported six fewer attorneys and four fewer employees than in 2015. Although Eaton Peabody remained ranked No. 6 among Maine law firms, with 51 attorneys and 112 employees, the firm is positioning itself to grow. In December, three years after the Bangor-based firm opened an office in Portland, officials announced that the firm planned to move to larger office space in 2017. When the move was announced, Eaton Peabody officials reported that the firm had experienced 300% growth, and firm-wide, its ranks of attorneys had grown by 30%, as the firm takes on more work statewide.
