WEX (NYSE: WEX), a payment solutions provider based in South Portland, and IDEXX (NASDAQ: IDXX), a biotech company based in Westbrook, each have fi ve executives on the list. This ranking is compiled according to total annual compensation for 2015. It is based on information pro- vided by the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. Jonathan Ayers, president and CEO of IDEXX, ranks No. 1 on this year's list, with $4,767,705 annual com- pensation in 2015. That's up from $4.3 million the year before. IDEXX, the largest Maine-based public company, employs more than 6,000 people and had $1.6 billion in revenue in 2015. It produces veterinary diagnostics, software, and water microbiology testing. In the No. 2 spot is WEX chief executive Melissa Smith, who earned $2,853,989 in total compensa- tion, compared to $4.5 million the year before. WEX is Maine's second-largest public company, with more than 2,000 employees. IDEXX Executive Vice President Michael Williams, the third most highly-paid executive on the list with $2,359,357, stepped down in November, and plans to leave in February 2017, after 14 years with the company. Williams had been instrumental in growing the company's in-house chemistry franchise, leading its Vetlab business and other global operations. WEX positioned itself for growth this year. Earlier this month the company got clearance from the Federal Trade Commission to make its largest acquisition to date — and buy its Nashville-based competitor, Electronic Funds Source LLC, a for nearly $1.5 billion. Banks also fi gure prominently on the list. Gregory Dufour, president and CEO Camden National Corp., whose compensation was $1.3 million, appears in the No. 6 spot on the list, up from No. 12 last year. The bank has 63 branches in Maine, and 650 employees, according to a Mainebiz ranking of Maine's biggest locally-based public companies, which was published in March, 2016. Another jump in the rankings came from Richard Wayne, president & CEO Northeast Bancorp, which is based in Lewiston. He is ranked No. 9 on this year's list, with total compensation of $874,608. He was in the No. 15 spot last year, with compensation of $515,064. The Lewiston-based bank, has 12 branches according to data from the FDIC, fi led June 30, 2016. The bank has 174 employees, according to Mainebiz. Curtis Simard, president and CEO of Bankshares and Bar Harbor Bankshares, ranks No. 11 on the list with $828,631, up two spots from last year. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has 223 employees according to the Mainebiz listing, and 14 branches, according to the FDIC. Tony McKim, President and chief executive of The First Bancorp Inc., which is based in Damariscotta, is ranked No. 15 with $615,609 in annual compensation.
