Former company officials plead not guilty of $19M MassHealth scheme WESTMINSTER — The former owner and three managers of Westminster-based Rite Way LLC have all pled not guilty in Worcester court on charges relating to an alleged $19-million MassHealth scheme. Michael Davini, Gary Carbonello, Dwayne Pelkey and Lynn Maguire all pled not guilty in Worcester Superior Court, according to the Office of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, to charges relating to an alleged scheme involving false claims billed to the state's Medicaid program (MassHealth). All four were released on personal recognizance. Davini, the former owner of the company, cannot leave the country and must check in weekly with probation, according to the AG's office. Harvard Bioscience sells German subsidiary for $1.7M HOLLISTON — Holliston life sci- ences manufacturer Harvard Bioscience announced it sold its Germany liquid handling product maker for $1.7 million. The company did not provide any other details on the disposition of AHN Biotechnologie GnbH, other than the subsidiary had $2.5 million in reve- nue for 2015. The announcement was made in Harvard Bioscience's third quarter financial release, where it announced a loss $1.6 million – or 5 cents per share – for the quarter. Nine mayors work to extend wellness trust fund The mayors of nine Massachusetts cities are among the more than 200 civic and health leaders who urged lawmakers to reauthorize a state trust fund aimed at preventing chronic health conditions like diabe- tes and asthma, as work on the fiscal 2018 state budget is underway. The Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund was established as part of a 2012 health care cost contain- ment law, and its funding is slated to expire in June 2017. The original funding, $60 million over four years, came from an assessment on health insurers and large hospital systems. The mayors include Mayor Joseph Petty of Worcester and the mayors of Hudson, Marlborough and Northborough. Sunovion encouraged by schizophrenia drug test MARLBOROUGH — Marlborough drugmaker Sunovion Pharmaceuticals announced that clinical tests for its new drug to treat adolescents with schizophrenia is showing positive signs. Sunovion said a six-week study of the drug Latuda showed statistically signifi- cant improvement in symptoms of young adults suffering from the mental health disease. Test subjects were given either a lower dose of 40 milligrams per day, a higher dose of 80 milligrams per day or a placebo. CardioFocus adds chief commercial officer MARLBOROUGH — Marlborough medical device manu- facturer CardioFocus Inc. announced that it added a new chief commercial officer and a vice president of U.S. sales. Omari Bouknight will take over as CCO. He was previously vice president of sales and marketing for multina- tional startup Cardiac Dimensions. Jeff Rynbrandt will take over as vice president of U.S. sales.
