From the friendly staff, to the nice gentleman who operates the store on the second floor, to the inexpensive parking, Worcester Regional Airport is a giant hit in my book. Feds grant Worcester Airport $1.4 million to enhance runway lighting By Brad Petrishen - Aug 22, 2016 WORCESTER – The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded Worcester Regional Airport a $1.4 million grant to enhance its low-visibility lighting system, U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern announced Monday. The money will provide for the installation of a Surface Movement Guidance and Control lighting system on a taxiway to Runway 11-29. The system will "enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions," according to a news release. Thomas P. Glynn, chief executive of the Massachusetts Port Authority, which operates the airport, called the new lighting system "critical" for the airport's eventual "CAT III" landing system. That $30 million system will reduce the amount of visibility pilots need to land from about half a mile to 600 feet. The system – which is used by Logan Airport in Boston - will allow more flights to land in bad weather, which officials hope will lead to more demand from business travelers. At a groundbreaking ceremony for the CAT III system last year, MassPort officials said construction should be complete in December 2017.
