Everyone feels like we are more of a family instead of just a group of co-workers," said Practice Manager Samantha Gudroe. Hersey EyeCare, pro- viding comprehensive eye care, deals with a diverse group of pa- tients. The team treats them all as individuals and works hard to make their time with the prac- tice pleasant and satis- fying. Employees handle challenging situations, acknowledging and en- couraging each other through hurdles as they come along. "Happy people make happy employees," said the practice's owner, Dr. John C. Hersey. "We like to make sure offi ce morale remains positive be- cause it can have an effect on customer service and coworker interactions. We not only want our employees happy, we want our patients happy, too." Employee satisfaction is nourished, fi rst and foremost, by a well-paced workday that encourages the staff to make "executive decisions" if they feel change or exceptions are necessary to help patients or to improve the offi ce. Then there's the excellent compensa- tion offered through "living wages," as well as great benefi ts such as health and den- tal insurance, 401(k) policies with employer contributions, Health Savings Accounts, paid vacation time and employee dis- counts. There's also fl exible vacation time, support for employee causes, random bo- nuses to reward not only hard work but also loyalty, and a special clothing thank-you, done with gift cards and a shopping trip to help cover the cost of work clothing. The "After Christmas" Christmas Party is a great opportunity to thank employees and their spouses with din- ner, games and gifts. Yearly employee appreciation, such as Paraoptometric Appreciation Week, provides plenty of fun. And then there are occasional of- fi ce surprises and casual Saturdays. Such programs were set up to ex- press appreciation for employees. "We want our employees to feel fueled and inspired to be the best of themselves every day by trying to meet their fi nancial, emotional, mental and spiritual needs," said Hersey. But really, it's all about that friendly and open atmosphere, between co- workers, and between employees and patients. "We have a very strong culture," said Gudroe. "Everyone feels that they serve a meaningful purpose within our 'workplace community.'" Hersey EyeCare A friendly and open atmosphere Hersey EyeCare P.O.
