B E S T P L A C E S TO W O R K 2 0 1 6 30 LARGE COMPANIES [ 250+ employees ] Perhaps the most important sup- port for employees at Machias Savings Bank is its family-fi rst philosophy. "We know how impor- tant a work/life balance is for our employees, so we support that with programs such as family fl ex time and additional maternity leave, which is new this year," said President/CEO Larry Barker. Family flex time is a 16-hour annual al- lotment above regular vacation and sick time, so employees can leave early to spend time with family. Many also work fl exible schedules, which involves some employ- ees arriving early and leaving early for the day and working four-day weeks. The staff is like a family itself. "We respect that our employees work very hard for our customers so we, in turn, want to work hard for them," said Barker. "In short, happy employees make happy customers." Employees enjoy good benefi t and compensation plans, and a suite of other programs. " We l e a r n what's meaning- ful to them by constantly ask- ing for feedback and input," said Barker. Programs al- lot up to 20 hours of paid time during nor- mal work hours to volunteer for an organization t h e y c h o o s e . Annually, the bank invites all employ- ees and guests to attend an outdoor concert of a well-known singer/band free of charge. They've seen artists such as Fallout Boy, Lady Antebellum, Toby Keith and Dierks Bentley. "It's a special day of music, food and fun," said Barker. Then there's Employee Appreciation Week—one in the spring and again near the end of summer. Contests take place all week and employees each receive a gift and free lunch. Fun Fridays are held every week in all branches, and offer employees the chance to celebrate days such as Mother's Day, Earth Day, or even Doughnut Day. Employees decorate the branch and bring in goodies to give to customers. Each year at the annual bankwide rally, employees are recognized for their years of service with a plaque, Machias Savings Bank clothing, and bonuses. Branches and departments are also recognized for meeting their goals for the year. An all-encompassing recognition program includes many rewards, including the coveted President's Award. Each year, a top volunteer is recognized, and a donation is given to the winner's nonprofi t choice. "Our employees know that they are genuinely cared about," said Barker.
