B E S T P L A C E S TO W O R K 2 0 1 6 18 MEDIUM COMPANIES [ 50 - 249 employees ] The work being done at Community Care—a nonprofi t agency that provides mental health and child/ family welfare services to children, families, and adults throughout Maine—can be very diffi cult each and every day. So the agency's leadership works hard to support a work/life balance that allows employees to be with their families for those important aspects of home life—things like doctor appointments, children performing in concerts or on stage, and basketball games. "We have an extremely f l e x i b l e t i m e - o f f program," said Executive Director Kate Davis. "So our staff is able to attend their children's events without feeling like they are not doing their jobs. Our work is important, and we recognize that our employees are the key to doing this work, so we support them in all the ways that we can." The work itself, although challenging, is deeply meaningful. Employees support some of the most vulnerable children, families and individuals in Maine, and being part of changing someone's life for the better is extremely satisfying. B e y o n d t h a t , leadership also makes sure they listen to employee feedback, and seeks ideas about best employee programs. Practices include an e x c e l l e n t b e n e f i t s package that includes dental and health insurance completely paid for by the agency, and a wellness program to encourage staff to take care of themselves. That includes a walking challenge, when teams compete to have the most combined steps over a six-week period. Supervisors encourage staff to reach their full potential through individual and group supervisions, training and professional development goals. Lunches with management provide a monthly forum for staff to give feedback and share ideas. A relaxed dress code makes staff feel comfortable while still being professional. The "Word Got Back" program recognizes two winners per month, recognized for outstanding service, who receive a gift and acknowledgement on the agency's website and Facebook page. Employees are recognized for years of service at the annual "All Staff " meeting with certifi cates, gifts and sentiments shared by supervisors. Anniversary cards, the annual staff celebration—with fun activities such as potato-jousting and scavenger hunts, cookie swaps and potlucks— also provide fun and relaxing time with co-workers. "Our management team strives to put programs and benefi ts in place that allow our staff to feel valued and important—because they are," said Davis.
