B E S T P L A C E S TO W O R K 2 0 1 6 20 MEDIUM COMPANIES [ 50 - 249 employees ] Committed. Dedicated. Purposeful. That's the work culture at Day One, a nonprofi t organization dedicated to addressing substance use disorders and mental health concerns among high- risk children and young adults in Maine going through a very diffi cult time in their lives. The work can be draining. But employees feel a great deal of reward in being part of a group of people who truly care about the adolescents they serve. "Our staff has the opportunity to turn around the lives of these adolescents and see them meet their full potential," said COO Lisa Munderback. "We hear from young adults after they have left the program and who come back to tell us how important it was for them to receive our help, who now are sober, working and participating in life." To support staff, Day One offers an incredible work/life balance that includes a generous time-off policy and fl ex time arrangement. Wellness and social activities are encouraged. For example, there's a group of employees who walk together during lunch. The staff enjoys m o n t h l y r a f f l e drawings, and birthday and service anniversary celebrations. Disability and life insurance are paid for by the agency, as is the opportunity for employees to volunteer at disaster relief sites. Day One provides annual training funds for continuing education. There are annual employee get-togethers—last year's was at a local bowling alley—as well as Yankee swaps, chair massages, and the agency's own bowling team. Overall, a culture of mutual respect and an open-door policy contributes to a balance that results in low turnover and staff longevity. This is important when grappling with the life-and-death issues involved in this work. Clinical staff attend agency-paid continuing education training to help deal with this. The agency also provides an employee assistance program and clinical supervision to ensure staff well-being. "Employee satisfaction keeps Day One open," said Munderback. "Our staff knows that our work is important and makes a difference. It's important to wake up and want to come to work, to be part of Day One. Satisfi ed staff is committed to working hard and working toward the best outcomes for clients. Having a great place to work makes it that much easier."
