U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said that the Somali Bantu Community in Lewiston, in partnership with the Cumberland County Food Security Council, will receive a $394,851 Community Food Projects grant to support the commu- nity's agricultural efforts to reconnect to its cultural heritage while reducing food insecurity. In addition, Rosemont Market in Portland received a $64,922 Local Food Promotion Grant from the USDA to develop a plan to double its lo- cal food sales in the next 3-5 years. The Economic Development Administration's comprehensive eco- nomic development strategy program announced a total of $464,500 has been awarded to seven Maine organi- zations. Recipients included Midcoast Economic Development District, Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission, Greater Portland Council of Governments, Kennebec Valley Council of Governments, Eastern Maine Development Corp. and Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments were all awarded $70,000 and the Penobscot Indian Nation was awarded $44,500. The U.S. Department of Justice award- ed four Maine police departments a total of $625,000 to hire police offi - cers through its COPS Hiring Program. The Biddeford Police Department will receive $250,000 while the Augusta Police Department, Ellsworth Police Department and Westbrook Police Department will each receive $125,000. The Maine State Police will receive a total of $251,995 to support the Maine Computer Crimes Unit in its ef- forts to protect children from Internet crime, reduce the backlog of evidence in current cases and fund the creation of three positions within the unit. The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that federal economic injury disaster loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural coopera- tives, small businesses engaged in aqua- culture and private nonprofi t organiza- tions located in Maine as a result of the drought that began on Aug. 2, 2016. This disaster declaration includes the follow- ing counties: Androscoggin, Cumberland, Oxford, Sagadahoc and York.
