In 2016, the American Heart Association is among the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials and the 20 Best Workplaces for Baby Boomers, according to Fortune rankings. The organization ranked No. 13 for baby boomers and No. 95 for millennials. MISSION STATEMENT The AHA's mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The nation's leader in CPR education training, the AHA teams with volunteers and community partners to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. SERVICE LOCATION(S) State of Maine 2017 GOALS Our impact goal is to, by the year 2020, to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20%, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20%. Some of the ways we are striving to reach this goal in Maine are: f Funding research with two active grants totaling nearly $250,000 both at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. f Inspiring women to take charge of their heart health through the Maine Goes Red statewide aware- ness campaign in partnership with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. f Improving employee health through workplace wellness programs and national Fit Friendly Worksite rec- ognition. Currently, 37 Maine com- panies receive this designation. f Teaming up with local schools to combat childhood obesity though programs like Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. During the last school year, Maine students raised a record $505,000 as part of this program. f Providing science-based treatment guidelines to health care profes- sionals to help them provide quality care to their patients with our Get With e Guidelines program. f Educating Mainers about the signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke, teaching CPR and stress- ing the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES f Lead a Heart Walk team at your company or with family and friends f Join our Maine Board of Directors f Participate in one of our event plan- ning committees f Gather employees to help with logistics at our events f Become an AHA Spokesperson. We always need heart disease and stroke survivors to share their stories and health professionals who can give a clinical perspective on the AHA's public health initiatives such as school nutrition, fitness, cholesterol and blood pressure management, smoking cessation and other ways to lower cardiovascular disease risk. f Become a You're the Cure Advocate to help educate our legislators on our public policy efforts regarding obesity prevention, heart disease and stroke prevention funding, tobacco control and health care reform ini- tiatives.
