People, places and happenings in Central Massachusetts Paul Davis Emergency Services of Auburn and Shrewsbury sponsored the Worcester Firefighters 6K Road Race June 12. Proceeds were donated to the Genesis Club, NEADS, Community Harvest Project, the WFD Scholarship Fund and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Middlesex Savings Bank awarded $325,500 to 20 area nonprofits, including Emerson Hospital of Concord; Family Promise MetroWest; and Friends of the Callahan Senior Center in Framingham. Barre Savings Bank donated $5,000 to The Listening Wellness Center in Barre, a holistic program. It's the first grant made by the bank's newly created fundraising foundation. CUISINE FOR A CAUSE Southbridge-based Harrington HealthCare System raised over $200,000 for its new Webster dual-diagnosis inpatient unit with A Fare to Remember, an event featuring great cuisine, auctions and more. The new unit should open next year. HEALTHCARE HEAD START Thanks to a $2.25-million federal grant, Fitchburg and Leominster's high school freshmen can join Project Healthcare, a program administered by Mount Wachusett Community College that prepares students for careers in healthcare and addresses racial and ethnic disparities in the field.
