Fallon Health squeaks out $100K in earnings WORCESTER — Fallon Health managed to bring in $100,000 in earn- ings in the second quarter, despite drops in both revenue and member- ship, the company announced, beating out the $2.5 million in losses it took in the second quarter 2015. The driving force behind the earnings for Fallon was $2.6 million in investment yields in the quarter. Fallon's financial news comes in an environment where insurance companies are happy for a break-even scenario. Local competitor Harvard Pilgrim Health Care reported earnings of $700,000 for the same period, with CFO Charley Goheen saying in a statement the organization was pleased with those results. Framingham biotech completes bleeding lesion trial FRAMINGHAM — Framingham medical device maker Arch Therapeutics reported it met the objectives of its clinical study for a device that treats bleeding skin lesions. The company's first clinical study found its product, the AC5 Topical Hemostatic Device, stopped bleeding 41 percent faster for the patients it was tested on versus patients in a control group. Clinical regulatory steps for the European Union and the U.S. are in the planning stages. UMass Memorial's Dickson pay increased 75 percent WORCESTER — Executives at the largest health network in Central Massachusetts saw a bump in their total compensation in 2014, according to the nonprofit's latest tax filing with the Internal Revenue Service. Dr. Eric Dickson, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, earned more than $1.6 million in 2014, accord- ing to company tax filings, a 75-percent increase over the $917,900 he made in 2013. UMass Memorial Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon saw his total take- home pay go up, from just short of $700,000 in 2013 to nearly $1.2 mil- lion in 2014, an increase of more than 70 percent. Sheila Daly, then-president of UMass Memorial — Clinton Hospital made $328,131 in 2014, com- pared to $263,202 the year before. Daly has since retired and been replaced by Lisa Colombo. Medicare gives UMass Memorial lowest quality ranking WORCESTER — Acute care hospi- tals in Central Massachusetts received moderate to low rankings on a five-star hospital ranking system put out by the federal government. Medicare.gov released Hospital Compare five-star ratings, ranking U.S. hospitals based on 64 quality measures and seven areas of quality. Most acute care hospitals in the region, including Saint Vincent Hospital, got three out of five stars. However, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, by far the region's largest hospital with 779 beds, got just one star. Data for some hospitals was available for as few as nine of the 64 quality measures. The rankings were widely panned state- wide.
