B I Z 7 A U G U S T 2 2 , 2 0 1 6 Maine says no to higher car insurance rates for seniors Maine Superintendent of Insurance Eric Cioppa rejected Progressive Corp.'s request to raise car insurance rates for older Maine drivers based solely on age. e Portland Press Herald reported that the Ohio-based company's proposed rate change for older drivers would have affected up to 65,000 policyholders in Maine. Cioppa ruled the change would have violated a section of Maine's insurance code that protects drivers from arbitrary rate increases based on their age, the news- paper reported. Progressive indicated it will not appeal Cioppa's decision, which was applauded by AARP. N O T E W O R T H Y S T A T E W I D E U.S. Sens Susan Collins and Angus King and U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin said the Northern Border Regional Commission awarded $2 million to upgrade infrastructure and provide job training skills that will result in eco- nomic growth across Maine. Recipients included town of Pittsfield, Central Maine Community College in Auburn, Maine Department of Transportation, Snow Pond Center for the Arts in Sidney, Maine Department of Labor, Northern Maine Regional Airport and Eastern Slope Airport, which each received $250,000; and the city of Auburn, which received $246,186. Olive Garden completed a remodel of its Augusta, Bangor and South Portland restaurants and donated furnishings from the redesigned res- taurants to local Habitat for Humanity ReStore outlets. Fryeburg Water Co. and Maine Water in Saco reached a contractual agreement for Maine Water to serve the 850 public water customers in Fryeburg as well East Conway, N.H. Maine Water will operate and maintain the public water system, including cus- tomer service, billing and accounting. MECA names interim president Stuart Kestenbaum, a long-time director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, was named interim president at the Maine College of Art in Portland, the board of trustees said. He steps into a role held by Don Tuski, who in June announced plans to leave MECA to become president at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Ore. In 27 years at Haystack, Kestenbaum was credited with estab- lishing innovative programs combin- ing craft and writing and craft and emerging technologies. He resigned from Haystack in May 2015, and was replaced by Paul Sacaridiz.
