Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor said over the last year, in just two surgical suites, its employees re- cycled 1.5 tons of waste. The hospital will now extend the single-sort recycling practice in all of its operating rooms with the expectation that it could decrease waste upwards of 10 tons per year. Bangor International Airport said it re- ceived a license from the Department of the Treasury to refuel Trans-Atlantic fl ights to Cuba. Aircraft will be allowed to refuel, de-ice and receive catering and other crew services, but will not be allowed to disembark or load any passengers. University Credit Union in Orono opened an expanded parking lot and new drive-up lane, featuring the credit union's fi rst Interactive Teller Machine, at its Farmington branch located at 154 High St. The Maine Community Foundation's Penobscot Valley Health Association Fund awarded grants totaling $103,100 to fi ve Bangor-area nonprofi ts. Recipients included Acadia Hospital, Bangor Area Recovery Network, Bangor Public Health and Community Services, Penobscot Community Health Care and Literacy Volunteers of Bangor. Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor will offer Health Care Secretary and Computer Applications Specialist certifi cate programs within its Medical Offi ce Technology degree this fall at its off-campus centers located in Dover- Foxcroft, Ellsworth and East Millinocket. The U.S. Department of Education awarded $773,280 in grant funding to the University of Maine System in Bangor and the University of Maine at Presque Isle to help students succeed in higher education. The funding was awarded through the department's Talent Search Program.
