Congratulations to the AI Team! Message from the President Abul Islam, PE, FASCE - President & CEO I n that time, we've grown from a small firm of a handful of people to one approaching 200 employees in five states; stretching from Massachusetts to Virginia with work as distant as New Mexico. This growth is exciting as we continue to increase our footprint re- gionally, in our branch offices, as well as a large expansion of our Middletown, CT corporate headquarters. I am incredibly proud of our 25 year history and I want our Silver Anniversary to be an opportunity for us to not only reflect on our successes, but also to look towards the future. As we push further into the new century, recurring issues have entered the public sphere that must be addressed. Our infrastruc - ture needs to cope with the demands of the U.S. economy. We must invest creatively and intelligently in our highways, bridges, transit/railroad, airport, water, wastewater and power grid infrastructure. While we continue to spend large sums of money to maintain our existing inventory, more funding with better manage- ment and smart project delivery systems are keys to boosting our economy and creating jobs, including the jobs of the future. Fortu- nately, new and rapidly advancing technology allows the industry to satisfy the needs of growing urban and suburban centers. AI is well positioned to solve these concerns with ingenuity and innova- tion to create a safer, more functional and sustainable infrastructure to benefit our society as a whole. I am also mindful of the responsibility that growing companies have within their communities. AI has been an active member of many groups and associations that promote the engineering indus - try as well as students from local communities both in high schools and in colleges from within the states we operate and around the world. We understand that our success is a function of the fresh and inventive ideas that come from the newest members of our company when added to the deep-rooted expertise of our more seasoned employees. In the last few years I have tasked senior management with creating programs to develop the young talent that has supplied a great amount of our growth and innovation. We continue to support local students by providing paid internships and mentor - ship each summer. Motivated young engineers are brought into our mentorship program where their ideas are shared and can influence the direction of the company. Through these programs, AI is developing the next generation of leaders and visionaries in the industry. It is also important that we support other players in our industry like general contractors, architects, and the building and transpor - tation officials who rely on our expertise, knowledge and advice. As a beneficiary of the Minority Business Enterprise program, I have seen how important public support can be for a small busi- ness. I have taken a personal interest in helping shape programs to assist small, minority and women-owned contractors to compete more effectively in the institutional infrastructure market. Finally, I want to thank our clients, employees, consultants and vendors who have made this publication and our success possi - ble. In the pages to come, we are sharing not only the pioneering and dynamic work that we have accomplished but our vision for the future of our organization and the industry as a whole.
