MARCH 24, 2014 Marijuana growers corner CT market For the past 80 years, if a business wanted to profit from growing marijuana in Connecticut, it had to do so illicitly, on the fringes of society. Not anymore. Four growers have cornered the state's nascent multi-million dollar medical marijuana industry, having navigated Connecticut's rigorous regulatory waters and the federal government's insistence that what they're doing still is illegal. MAY 12, 2014 Can Infinity Hall, Front Street restore Hartford's groove? The opening of Infinity Music Hall & Bistro could for the first time in generations help downtown Hartford reclaim its mantle as a viable stop for big-name performers it had in the '30s and '40s, when jazz bandleader Duke Ellington, pop singer Frank Sinatra and other top bills regularly played downtown's State Theater, among other local venues. A look back at what made business headlines in 2014: What have you accomplished professionally since being chosen as a 40 Under Forty class? Since being chosen as a 40 Under Forty, I was appointed by Commissioner Catherine Smith as the director of culture for the state of Connecticut in May 2015. Here are some of the things I've accomplished: • I have launched the development of the first statewide cultural strategy using a human-centered design process and revived Connecticut Arts Day at the State Capitol; • I piloted a new grant program called Good to Great, which supports both the heritage and arts communities; • I'm currently working with municipalities across Connecticut to integrate artistic practice and process with economic development; • I have joined the boards of the Connecticut Forum and the New England Foundation of the Arts and was invited to do a TEDx talk at SMU in Dallas in the fall of 2015, which has over 12,500 views; • I have been fortunate to have earned several awards and recognitions for my work, including being selected as a National Arts Strategies Cre- ative Community Fellow, a Hive Global Leadership Selectee and a Next City Vanguard 40 Under 40. How do you expect your profession/industry to change in the future? I work in the creative sector and I think it is going to become more and more apparent across all other sectors that the integration of creative practice/pro- cess will ultimately lead to increased happiness in the workplace, innovative solutions, improved effi- ciency and more vibrant communities. I look forward to that shift when the arts/creativ- ity are recognized by all industries as a necessity not a nicety.
