Wolff 2008 Winner List: Past Classes: 2008 What have you done professionally since winning 40 Under Forty? Since winning 40 Under Forty, I continued at the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism until 2011. I served as a legal consultant to the city of Waterbury (within the Office of the Corporation Counsel) and now am the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Waterbury. What words of wisdom do you have for this year's 40 Under Forty class? Market yourself as a 40 Under Forty winner — use it to network and to sell yourself. It is a relatively exclusive "club" and people are aware that it is an accomplishment. You've transitioned from the government to nonprofit sector. What are biggest differences/ similarities in both jobs? Running a nonprofit is often viewed as somehow very different than the for-profit world. However, both have to be run as a business, focusing on governance, revenue, product, customer service, etc. In govern- ment, your concerns are the same — you are serving the citizens of, in my case, the state — as opposed to serving children and the community as I do now. In government, revenue concerns are different. Other than that, in both entities (nonprofit and government), you are still a leader. The day-to-day management is very similar. For me, the staff at the former Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tour- ism was very dedicated and passionate about our work, especially within the individual disciplines (arts, historic preservation, film, tourism). The staff in nonprofit organizations tend to also be passion- ate and dedicated.
