10 Worcester Business Journal • Book of Lists 2016 www.wbjournal.com Y ou might connect the name Michael Covino with Niche Hospitality, the par- ent company for five different concept restaurants in Central Massachusetts. But his real passion and educational back- ground – he holds a graduate degree in physical therapy – has always been fitness. In 2015, he fulfilled a long-time dream of opening a fitness and per- formance training center. The minute you step through the doors of Peak Fitness Performance Training, you know this place means busi- ness. With 10,000 square feet of high-quality speed turf, a wide assortment of free weights, kettlebells, ropes, medicine balls, mats and other fitness equipment, the facility is equipped to address the needs and goals of any individual, from the student athlete to the weekend war- rior and everyone in between. "Fitness is different for different people. Some use it as a way to blow off steam. Others are looking for weight loss or to increase their energy. No matter the goal, we have a program for everyone," says Covino. And he's right. Performance training vs. workouts Peak offers 80 workouts that are far from your run-of- the-mill exercise class. "A lot of effort and education goes into each class. Our mantra is to design scientific, well coached, effective and safe, all encompassing workouts," Covino asserts. "If you're going to work out, let us give you the best possible workout. What we offer is perfor- mance training versus just a workout." Classes combine metabolic conditioning with strength training and change every day, so members have the opportunity to work different muscle groups, which helps to avoid fatigue and injury. State-of-the-art training is not all about machines. It's about movement. Performance training has definitive goals and requires a serious mental and physical com- mitment and the staff at Peak will hold participants accountable. Our scientific programs are based on per- sonal assessment," Covino says. "We look at the individ- ual's mobility, strength, imbalances, and listen to their goals. Whether you aim to be a better athlete, lose weight or run a race, this type of training goes beyond working out, and will provide what you're looking for." During weekly think tank meetings, staff develops future workouts. "We break down the classes and discuss specifics about the movements and will use the exercises in different combinations," Covino says, adding that these meetings build on a program throughout the week in what he calls "periodization," a fundamental method that follows a progression. "Even if you don't come every day, you can see improvements." In addition to the 45- to 60-minute boot camp and strength workouts, Peak offers customized one-on-one and semi-private trainings as well as "accessory" classes. These 30-minute sessions focus on mobility and a par- ticular body part, such as core, legs or upper body, using kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells or some other piece of equipment. At Peak you'll find the most qualified, seasoned and experienced personnel in the industry. Licensed physical therapists, strength and conditioning specialists with advanced degrees and certified personal trainers ensure that all programs are customized and safe for every cli- ent. All staff members are career professionals and understand function and dysfunction. "We work hard with you," says Covino. Many of Peak's programs are designed by physical therapists from the on-site clinic.
