Erin M. McEnaney (pictured), president and owner of Rainbow Movers, never originally planned to take over the com- pany founded in 1918 by James McEnaney, but her own career path and some ups and downs in the tra- ditionally male-dominated moving industry led her to running the ninth largest women-owned busi- ness in Central Massachusetts. "Having the longevity where I know what I am talking about gives me some credibility," McEnaney said. "Today, a woman coming into the business would have a very difficult time." McEnaney went to school to study geriatrics, but 35 years ago her father asked her to join the fam- ily business. She started as a move coordinator and moved up the lad- der from there. McEnaney – who has five younger brothers and one younger sister – and three of her brothers bought out their father when he decided to retire. When the Great Recession hit, the company suffered, particularly because of its reliance on logistics for trade shows, and ended up fil- ing Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which led to two of her brothers leaving the company. As the company is growing now, Rainbow Movers has paid back 80 percent of the ven- dors from its bankruptcy. "I'm proud to say we are going to get them all paid back," McEnaney said. She ended up buying out her remaining brother, got 100-percent ownership of the company and was certified as a woman-owned business by the Massachusetts Operational Services Division in December. Today, McEnaney is focused on growth and keeping a diverse cli- ent portfolio to avoid relying too much on one segment. "We have a very good reputa- tion," McEnaney said. "We have been pretty steady with our growth." - Brad Kane
