Because of the location within a wildlife sanctuary and the organization's mission being to protect that environment, the 5,700-square-foot building had to be built with extra care given to the terrain and wildlife that surrounded the site. "The extremely small layout as well as an obvious desire to protect the forest presented a number of constraints that we had to work around," said Bill O'Rourke, project executive at Consigli. "It was crucial for us to strictly adhere to a complex and detailed schedule for deliveries because at certain times, access to the site would be extremely limited due to the close zone of influence that we were working in. We were also constantly concerned with limiting our impact on the surrounding environment." This started with the design of the timber frame house that twists and turns with the landscape. Making those plans a reality required handcrafted timber framing and custom-cut cedar detail installation. That custom work was guided by computers, with Consigli engineers using laser scanning to create 3D models for review and study. "Our company has a deep and rich history of building and self- performance work. At our core, that is who we are – builders," O'Rourke said. "But we're also big on innovation." Additionally, the site's terrain sat at different levels and created several, unsafe conditions for workers with drops as much as 60 Consigli merges nature, construction Trailhead House at Boylston's Summer Star Wildlife Santuary Continued on next page
