However, it is still far behind the number of hotel rooms in other cit- ies in the region. Worcester currently has 845 hotel rooms, with the recent addi- tion of the 100-room Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton, with approxi- mately 260 more rooms set to come online by 2017. However, even with the completion of the two other hotels in the works for the downtown area, Worcester will have fewer hotel rooms than Springfield after its $800-million casino project is completed. That project is projected to add another 250 rooms to Springfield's current stock of 947 rooms. These room numbers pale in comparison to Hartford with 1,800 rooms and Providence with just under 2,300 rooms. All of this is vital when large events consider coming to the area, said Sandy Dunn, general manager of the DCU Center in Worcester. The city has been dismissed in the past for events due to the hotel room constraints. Events that do come to the area are often forced to seek additional rooms in surrounding communi- ties, Dunn said. Having people driv- ing back and forth to the event is not ideal, and each of those out-of- town reservations is a missed opportunity for the city. Each per- son attending an event in the city spends, on average, $96, according to a study by Holy Cross Professor Victor Matheson that was commis- sioned by Destination Worcester, while the same person who stays overnight spends, on average, $215. - Sam Bonacci In February, construction began at the long-term stay hotel near Washington Square.
