B I Z 7 M AY 2 , 2 0 1 6 IDEXX founder to receive honorary degree e Maine College of Art has announced its commencement speaker and honorary degree recipients for its graduation ceremony May 7 at the State eatre in Portland — and IDEXX and Black Point Group LLC founder David Shaw will be joined by MECA alum C. David omas in receiving an honor- ary degree from the Portland school. Shaw founded the Westbrook-based IDEXX in 1983 and served as its CEO and chairman for nearly 20 years before leaving the animal health diagnostics and IT company in 2002 to set up Black Point Group LLC in Portland as a vehi- cle to invest in other companies. When Mainebiz spoke to Shaw in November of last year, he talked candidly about his early stint as an entrepreneur in Maine during the early years of IDEXX. " is is sort of a story about being in Maine," Shaw told Mainebiz. "It was impor- tant for me to get capital not from Maine, because I was worried about the syndrome in Maine where you're not thinking about being a global leader and you're not maybe thinking big enough and bold enough." N O T E W O R T H Y S O U T H E R N Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. received the National Hydropower Association's 2016 Outstanding Stewards of America's Waters Award in the category of Operational Excellence for its RivGen hydrokinetic system designed for rivers and shallow tidal waters. The award recognizes the company's project that supplied one third of the electricity needed by the remote Alaskan village of Igiugig from power generated by a RivGen unit place in the Kvichak River. Bernstein Shur, a law fi rm in Portland, recently established a Complex Bankruptcy Mediation and Fiduciary Services Group. Maine Medical Center in Portland an- nounced the opening of a pediatric in- tensive care unit at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. The unit serves children with acute critical illness, serious injuries from accidents, burns, severe neurological illness or injury, organ failure and those who have un- dergone complex surgery. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $296,571 for parking garage improvements at the Casco Bay Island Ferry Service in Portland. The project was selected on a competitive basis through the Fiscal Year 2015/2016 Passenger Ferry Program. Kane Insurance opened an offi ce at 6 City Center, Suite 307, in Portland. The Portland International Jetport announced that Southwest Airlines added a fourth daily fl ight for sale to Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport. The new fl ights operate through Nov. 4.
