www.wbjournal.com March 14, 2016 • Worcester Business Journal 3 This issue's cover story by Digital Editor Sam Bonacci is a case study in patience. Ultimately, the article – saying UMass Memorial Health Care's $700-million investment in a new information-technol- ogy system will result in the organization spreading its employees throughout Central Massachusetts, rather than keeping them near main campuses – came out bril- liantly, touching on the realities of technol- ogy in modern medicine against the back- drop of UMass' employment strategy. It took quite a bit of hustle on Bonacci's part to bring the story together, but, frankly, it also took a lot of waiting. UMass Memorial actually pitched us the story back in January, to our healthcare reporter and editor extraordinaire Emily Micucci. The system pitched it as a story detailing where all its employees and contract workers would be located in the next five years, particularly in downtown Worcester. The pitch came on the heels of UMass announcing late last year that it was planning on hiring 100 IT employees and another 100 contract workers as part of its announcement to put 500 IT workers in the Mercantile Center in Worcester, so we were interested in what spaces the region's largest employer would be occupying. Getting the necessary sources inside UMass turned out to be a bigger challenge than original thought. In fact, Micucci, who was pregnant at the time the pitch was made, has since given birth to her second child – her first daughter, Julia – while we were wait- ing and remains on maternity leave. Bonacci took over the story in her absence and waited for several weeks as UMass was tied up in a $177-million bond offering and could only make CEO Eric Dickson available for comment this month. In between, Bonacci tracked down other sources on electronic medical records and learned more about UMass real estate plans. Most stories for the Worcester Business Journal print edition come together in about a week or two. For certain others, though, you just have to wait. -Brad Kane, editor This Week In The WBJ Worcester Business Journal (ISSN#1063-6595) is published bi-weeky, 24x per year, including 5 special issues in April, July, September, November and December, by New Engand Business Media. 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604.
