www.wbjournal.com February 29, 2016 • Worcester Business Journal 3 As I write this, Staff Writer Laura Finaldi sits less than 10 feet away, furi- ously typing out a story from an interview she had Wednesday night with Fred Eppinger, the outgoing president and CEO of The Hanover Insurance Group. Landing the interview was quite the coup for Finaldi. Several other media out- lets were chasing Eppinger, supposedly to discuss his 13-year legacy of turning Hanover into a global player in the insur- ance industry. In addition, we were interested in what is hap- pening with the search to replace him, as well as the replace- ment for Chief Financial Officer David B. Greenfield, who died unexpectedly this past autumn. The fun part for Finaldi and Worcester Business Journal is we send the print edition to press at 1 p.m. on Thursdays. We could have opted to run the story in our March 14 issue, but with several other media outlets champing at the bit to get the infor- mation we already had received, we didn't want to wait more than two weeks to run the story. So, with a 4 p.m. Wednesday interview with Eppinger, Finaldi would have less than a day to turn out a story that she normally would have a week or more to write – plus track down and interview Hanover Chairman Michael Angelini for the same story. The end result, of course, you can see on the front page of this issue. Eppinger and Angelini discuss the new CEO search; the decision to wait to fill the CFO position; the impact Greenfield's death had on Eppinger and the entire company; and what – after 13 successful years – Eppinger's legacy will be at Hanover and in Greater Worcester. If nothing else, news is never boring. The emergence of the digital age gives us the ability to break stories as we write them, but some articles are better in print. The legacy of Fred Eppinger and the future of Hanover is one of those stories, even if we have to scramble to put it in. -Brad Kane, editor This Week In The WBJ Worcester Business Journal (ISSN#1063-6595) is published bi-weeky, 24x per year, including 5 special issues in April, July, September, November and December, by New Engand Business Media. 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604.
