USM digitizing library's globe collection e University of Southern Maine's Osher Map Library is undertaking a multi-year project to digitize 24 of its nearly 300 globes, some of which have been hidden from public view for hundreds of years. e Portland Press Herald reported that the library's 294- globe collection is the second-largest public collection of globes in the United States, second only to the Library of Congress' collection. Eventually, the map library in Portland would like to digi- tize its entire collection. e project to digitize 24 of the globes is being funded with a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, according to the Press Herald.
