McCallum C O N T I N U E D O N P A G E 8 0 » C lose readers comparing the 2016 list of Maine's largest law firms with the 2015 list will notice there's been a reshuffling among the Top 5: Bernstein Shur has moved into the No. 1 slot from No. 4, while last year's No. 1, Pierce Atwood, is now No. 3. Preti Flaherty drops from No. 3 to No. 4. There's a simple explanation. This year's rankings are based on each law firm's total attorneys based in Maine, whereas in previous years we had included at- torneys working for regional law firms headquartered in Maine that also had one or more offices in other states. Pierce Atwood, for example, has offices in Boston (33 attorneys, according to its website); Portsmouth, N.H. (16); Providence, R.I. (14); and Washington, D.C. (4). But numbers are only part of the story. The 3,100- plus members of the Maine Bar Association enhance Maine's economic prosperity and community well-being in countless ways. Here are just a few examples: Verrill Dana received the Volunteer Lawyers Project's Pro Bono Publico Award at the Maine State Bar Association's 2015 Annual Meeting for donating the most "Lawyer of the Day" hours of any Maine law firm in 2015. Pierce Atwood's Portland office spread its "Day of Community Service" among three worthy causes. At Port Resources, which supports people with de- velopmental and behavioral health challenges, its volunteers performed odd jobs at several of the nonprofit's group homes. At Fort Williams Arboretum volunteers removed invasive plants. And at Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, which provide refuge for horses that have suffered abuse, volunteers stained fences, cleaned stalls and pad- docks, and helped with grounds maintenance. Drummond Woodsum was honored by Maine Preservation for its role in the Boiler House Lofts project in Saco and The Inn at Diamond Cove on Great Diamond Island, both of which were complex redevelopments of historic properties involving ex- tensive permitting and tax credits. Although Eaton Peabody remained in the No. 6 slot, its attorney numbers grew as a result of a consolida- tion with the Portland law firm of Wakelin, Hallock and O'Donovan, whose three lawyers joined Eaton Peabody on Sept. 1 to create the second-largest employee ben- efits and executive compensation practice group in the state after Verrill Dana. Collectively, David S. Wakelin, Leslie C. Hallock and Anne E. O'Donovan bring almost 100 years of experience in employee benefits, execu- tive compensation, fiduciary compliance, mergers and acquisitions, pensions and estate planning to Eaton Peabody's expanded practice group. Bernstein Shur took the occasion of its 100th an- niversary to undertake a complete brand makeover. The firm tapped New York City marketing agency, Thinkso, to help create a new brand featuring bold colors built around clear messaging and the succinct and confident "Be Shur" trademark. "The project began as a typical website refresh, but it quickly morphed into a total brand re-think as we asked ourselves, are we really telling our story in the best way?" said Jim Keenan, a trademark attorney and member of the firm's board of directors. "The new brand is in line with the firm's culture and set us apart in an authentic way. It's clear and direct. It's smart but also approachable. And, it's confident. It quickly conveys that our firm values the same attributes that our clients value." In mid-November, Pierce Atwood announced that Gloria A. Pinza will be stepping down as managing partner at the end of 2015 and will be succeeded by David E. Barry, who until recently had served as chair- man of the firm's litigation practice group. Pinza, who had served as managing partner for seven years, will continue as a partner in the firm. Pinza oversaw the expansion of the firm's Boston office and the launch of its Providence, R.I., office. She also successfully relocated the firm's Portland office to the Portland waterfront in 2011 and led the firm's rebranding effort, which included a new website and social media presence to enhance communication with clients. — J a m e s M c C a r t h y Top firms' rankings change under new Mainebiz approach
